Jordan and Shiralee didn’t start their careers as support workers. Jordan, 30, served in the army and mother of three Shiralee, 31, worked as a receptionist and a cleaner. Now, as part of the Centacare team, they are fulfilling what they describe as a long-held calling to care. Sunday 7 August marks Aged Care Employee Day, an opportunity to recognise the incredible work of 360,000 Australians who enrich the lives of older people in residential, home and community care settings.

When the curtain went up on Quirky’s debut at QPAC last week, the 25 artists were joined on stage by some very special guests. Patchwork dinosaurs Thumpy and Lumpy were made especially for the show – lovingly designed and hand-crafted by Lyndal, one of the cast of the Real and Diverse (RAD) Theatre ensemble, supported by Centacare.

This NAIDOC Week (3-10 July) Centacare reaffirms its commitment to social justice and the importance of healing and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, commissioning an original artwork by contemporary Indigenous artist, 17-year old Brooke Sutton. The artwork takes pride of place in the reception area of Centacare's new Gold Coast hub and Gold Coast Family Relationship Centre.

More emphasis is being placed on learning to recognise the signs of elder abuse, with calls to Queensland’s elder abuse hotline showing older people are more likely to experience abuse in their own home, at the hands of their own family. More than 300 people have come together at Centacare's annual candlelight vigil and march to take a stand against domestic and family violence. Centacare has hosted the event since 2003, and over the last several years has partnered with Sunshine Coast Council to deliver the vigil, a core part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
