At challenging stages in your life it can be difficult to find meaning in what you are experiencing. Talking through that struggle, with someone who will sit quietly with you and listen without judgement, can help you to make sense of your experiences. This is where chaplains and pastoral carers come in.
As a faith based organisation we believe that pastoral and spiritual care is an integral part of the continuum of care people require over their lifetime. Our chaplains and pastoral carers are trained in the Catholic tradition to show loving care to all members of our community who need support. In all interactions with a chaplain or pastoral carer you set the agenda and they will come with listening ears and an open mind to support you.
Chaplains and pastoral carers are regular members of the community who have volunteered their time to be a listening ear to people who need support. Centacare chaplains and pastoral carers are members of the Catholic community and typically have a deep personal faith. In their role as chaplains and pastoral carers they focus on being respectful and deep listeners. Our chaplains and pastoral carers do not attempt to solve problems or provide spiritual direction and respect the faith and beliefs of all people.
Chaplains and pastoral carers don’t have an agenda when they are visiting with people nor are they there to offer advice or try to solve any problems. Instead, they come to listen without judgement to your story and what you are facing. We don’t set outcomes for what needs to be achieved during your visit, instead our chaplains and pastoral carers will be guided by you and what you need. They will not take notes on your discussion or share what they hear with others.
Chaplains and pastoral carers come to offer a listening ear and to support you to work through what you are currently experiencing. For many people a visit from a chaplain or pastoral carer leaves them experiencing a sense of peace, acceptance of what is happening for them, some clarity about how they can move forward and relief that they have been able to share their story with someone they can trust in extreme confidence.
Centacare chaplains and pastoral carers are trained in the Catholic tradition but here to support all members of the community. We recognise and respect that no two people have the same relationship with their faith and spirituality. Our chaplains and pastoral carers will work with you and your beliefs, they don’t offer spiritual direction or guidance. Our focus is to be a listening presence for you, allow you to tell your story and support you in your beliefs and world view. We invite you to share your forms of prayer or reflection with our chaplains and pastoral carers, so they can support you in the ways that are most personally meaningful for you.
