What makes a good life?

What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it’s fame and money, think again. According to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, it’s social connection that keeps us living well. At Centacare we know your heart and soul is in your home and we’re committed to helping you live a good life from there, connected to your community, friends and social networks.

Here are our top tips for keeping connected to other people in later life.

Find your purpose

It’s important we continue to find meaning in life as we age. Activities keep our minds working well and hobbies and interests are often inherently social in nature. Whether it’s a love of gardening, a card game with friends or the occasional day trip, our social and community support activities are a great way to get out and about, with a sense of purpose and social connection.

Take advantage of flexible respite

Everyone needs some time out for themselves to stay at their best. If you spend time caring for someone else, you may have fewer opportunities to catch up with friends and family. Our flexible help to care options, provide in-home and community based support for the person you care for so you can focus on your own wellbeing, knowing your loved one is in safe hands. Our respite cottages and centre respite options also give your loved one the opportunity to connect with others and engage in activities as little or as much as they’d like.

Make fitness social

Exercise becomes particularly important as we get older and there are plenty of ways to stay active while socialising with friends. Consider joining a walking group or a low-impact fitness class such as aqua aerobics, aqua pilates or body balance. If you struggle with mobility or have not exercised in a while, it’s a good idea to see a physiotherapist before you begin.

Make the most of extra help

Many people are unaware of the services that can help them improve their social connections and live active and fulfilled lives from the home they love. Maybe some help around the house would help you get out more? Maybe you’d like the opportunity to connect with people through day trips or a fitness class?

Centacare can help you understand what funding might be available to you and guide you through the application process. We provide all kinds of great services and can work in partnership with you to help design a program that will keep you feeling socially connected.
