Support at Home is nearly here

A simpler and more flexible program to help older Australians live independently and safely at home for longer will be launched by the Australian Government in just a few days.

After being pushed back from the original 1 July launch date, Support at Home will commence on 1 November 2025, replacing the following existing programs:

  • Home Care Packages (HCP)
  • Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC)

We understand that aged care funding changes can be complex, and many people have questions about what this means for them. Whether you are currently receiving a Home Care Package or are on the waitlist for funding, this article provides a helpful summary of what you can expect.

You’re a Centacare client

On 1 November, Centacare clients receiving Home Care Packages will automatically transition to the new Support at Home program.

What you can expect:

  • No disruption to care: If you or someone in your family is a Centacare client, your services will continue without interruption. You’ll keep your current provider and funding level.
  • Updated pricing, budget, and a new Client Agreement: We have provided our clients with all the information needed to understand how the upcoming changes to pricing and budgets will affect them. You will have received a new agreement that clearly outlines your rights, responsibilities, and the services we’ll continue to provide so you can feel confident and supported every step of the way.
  • Care Partner meeting: Your Centacare Care Partner will call you to review your care plan and service agreement and discuss new pricing. Due to time constraints this may not happen until after 1 November, but do not worry, your care will not be interrupted!

You’re waiting for Support at Home funding

Depending on the national demand for Support at Home, you may still have to wait some months before you get your funding. Here are some options for you to consider in the meantime:

  • Explore interim government funding: Even a few hours of support a week can make a difference to your comfort and safety at home. If you’re waiting on Support at Home funding, you may be eligible to receive interim government funding through the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Contact us to find out more.
  • Tap into local community services: Many community organisations, councils and charities provide low-cost or volunteer-based services for older people.Reach out to your local council or neighbourhood centre – they often maintain lists of local support options.
  • Do your research: Now is a great time to advocate for yourself and get the right provider on board. For older Australians and their families, the aged care reforms raise important questions. What is the new Support at Home program and how do I choose my provider?
