Getting ready for the new school year, a local boy is excited to pick up a new Batman backpack with his Dad at Centacare’s School Savvy Pop-Up Shop in Maryborough.
More than 200 Maryborough families have been supported to start the 2026 school year with confidence through Centacare’s School Savvy Pop‑Up Shop.
The initiative provided practical support with affordable pre‑loved school uniforms and essential school supplies, easing financial pressure and giving children the chance to head back to school prepared and ready to learn.
Families were welcomed in a safe, respectful, and community‑led space at the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre, with items available for gold coin donation prices.
Siobhan, a single mum of five, said the beginning of the school year was an incredibly stressful time for her. “I honestly didn’t know how I was going to manage,” she said. “I came along today and was able to purchase most of what my kids need for only $80. I can’t tell you what this means or thank the School Savvy team enough. What a wonderful program.”
The need for programs like School Savvy has never been more evident. Queensland families continue to face significant cost-of-living pressures, with everyday expenses such as rent, fuel, utilities and food rising sharply in recent years. Many households struggle to balance these costs with the added burden of back‑to‑school expenses.
Patricia Gorman, Centacare Family and Relationship Services Area Manager said the impact of School Savvy was immediate and deeply felt.
“Having so many families walk through the doors highlighted just how many households are doing it tough,” Patricia said. “It was also a great testament to the power of community. Thanks to the incredible support of local partners here in Maryborough, children will get a fair start to the 2026 school year.”
Local organisations and businesses that stepped up and made a real difference included the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre, Second Life Women’s Hub Yoorana, Lifeline Maryborough, The Barber Shop, Bunnings Warehouse Maryborough, Sauers, Bottlebrush Craft Centre, Big W and The Services Club Maryborough.
Donna Window, part of the Centacare School Savvy project team, shared the experience on the day.
“Families were lined up outside before the doors even opened. It was very busy but everyone was so patient and supportive of one another,” she said. “It was a privilege to see the smiles and feel the sense of relief. It’s not just about uniforms and stationery. It’s about hope, connection and reassurance that support is available.”
Looking ahead, Centacare is already planning for School Savvy 2027. Teena Ingram, General Manager Family and Relationship Services, said the team is assessing community need across the Centacare Brisbane footprint to guide expansion.
“We want to bring School Savvy to more communities next year, so children throughout South East Queensland can start school prepared and confident,” Teena said. “If you’re a business or community member interested in supporting School Savvy, your donations, volunteering or sponsorship will make a real difference – helping families and children begin the year with a sense of belonging and possibility.”
School Savvy was first established by Centacare FNQ in 2016 and has since grown across Queensland. The 2026 Maryborough pop-up marked the first time the initiative was delivered by Centacare Brisbane in the Fraser Coast region, responding to identified local need and bringing families together through care, dignity, and practical support.
