A voice of strength

For almost 60 years, Rosemary has called her family home her sanctuary. It’s the place where she and her late husband, Len, created memories, raised their seven children and later watched their ten grandchildren grow.

She’s a strong and determined woman and, in recent years, has overcome significant challenges to continue living in her beloved family home. “I’ve always believed in the power of a strong voice, it’s my gift from God,” said the 81-year old, who once graced Brisbane’s airwaves as a radio announcer on 4BH and 4BC.

In 2015, Rosemary underwent spinal surgery. “My doctor told me that I wouldn’t be able to do everyday things anymore—like mopping and vacuuming—because of the strain on my spine,” she recalls.

This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Rosemary. Centacare supported her to access funding for in-home care, providing the help that Rosemary needed to adapt to her new way of life.

In 2019, life took a devastating turn for Rosemary when her beloved husband, Len, passed away. Then, a series of falls led to major surgery and further impacted Rosemary’s mobility.

Despite all of this, Rosemary has been able to stay in her home. With funding from a Centacare Home Care Package, Rosemary receives comprehensive support at home, including assistance with showering and grooming to help with her weekly grocery shopping and meal preparation. “I love to cook but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. I once nearly put cat food on my salad instead of tuna! My support worker and I had a good laugh about that!”

Centacare also supports Rosemary with life admin including opening mail and paying bills.

“Centacare takes the time to understand what’s important to me and supports me in the ways that allow me to continue doing the things I love. Reading has always been a joy for me, so it’s been hard to adjust to needing help with that but I’m thankful I can still enjoy a good book with a little help.”

Rosemary’s care plan also allows her to visit St Mark’s Catholic Parish. “I didn’t realise how much I missed going to church. Now with help from my support worker Karina, I’m able to get to church most Sundays.”

Rosemary reflected on what life is like for many older Australians. “You need all the support you can get,” said Rosemary. “Support from your family, your GP, your faith and organisations like Centacare. They’ve made it possible for me to stay where I belong, in the home that holds my memories, my voice and my heart. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
