When caring counts

Failing eyesight has put Eileen’s ability to live independently from her Acacia Ridge home to the test. But with the combined support of a Centacare Home Care Package and her loving family, the 92-year-old continues to live her life from the home she holds dear.

Growing up during the war, Eileen developed perseverance and resilience, qualities that stand her in good stead as she battles to stay in her beloved home of more than four decades.

“It’s no easy feat to look after this place,” said Eileen. “I need support to carry out most of my daily living tasks.”

Eileen’s journey with Centacare began ten years ago when she received government funding for minor home modifications such as railings and grab rails. As her eyesight worsened, Eileen’s Service Leader, Kamal, advocated for her to receive additional funding, arranging an ACAT assessment with My Aged Care.

Eileen now lives confidently with wrap-around support from Centacare. Her support workers visit her five days a week and help with everyday support at home tasks such as cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning and personal care.

“They understand how important it is for everything to remain in place so I can find what I need and support me to do the things I can still do,” said Eileen. They work alongside her in one of her favourite rooms in the house, the kitchen. Eileen may not be able to cook on her own anymore, but she can work the oven to heat her meals.

Sometimes, Eileen and her support workers will sit and enjoy a conversation over a cup of tea or plan for the week ahead to make sure she has everything she needs. Eileen also used Home Care Package funding to purchase a walking aid, which enables her to move comfortably within her home.

Eileen is an intelligent woman. She won a scholarship in her early years and embarked on a successful career as a comptometrist. A comptometrist compiled, computed and recorded billing, accounting, statistical, and other numerical data for billing purposes on the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator, a predecessor to electronic calculators. Her commitment to a healthy mind and staying informed and connected to the world is unwavering—she listens to the radio or TV to stay updated on global news.

Faith plays a crucial role in Eileen’s life. Unable to attend church physically, she finds solace in knowing she can join a congregation from her bed. “There will always be a mass going on somewhere. I don’t have to physically be there to be present,” she explains.

Eileen’s mantra is simple yet profound: “If you concentrate on what you haven’t got, it will multiply. Count your blessings.”
