The many different faces of social connection

Whether it’s a weekly fitness class, a card game with mates or the occasional day trip, social connection is vital to our sense of belonging and our sense of community. This Seniors Month, we chat to some of the beautiful ladies at our Amelia House Social and Community Hub about what’s important to them and how they stay socially connected.

Emina, 72, Greenslopes

How long have you been coming to Amelia House Social and Community Hub?
15 years. I come every Wednesday and Thursday.

What’s most important to you?
My cat (Kann) and looking smart in good clothes, hair and make-up. I love feeling good about myself and I enjoy it when my friends compliment my style.

What helps you feel most connected?
Sharing my interests with others. Many ladies here now love dressing smartly, doing their hair and putting on make-up. We talk about fashion and compliment each other. I also sing and recite poetry, which everyone here loves. Before COVID-19, the Hub held dinner nights where I would sing. I sing ‘Time to Say Goodnight’ by Andrea Bocelli.

Rae, 69, Coorparoo

How long have you been coming to Amelia House Social and Community Hub?
2.5 years. I come every day of the week.

What’s most important to you?
I have clinical depression so it’s important for me to have an avenue that I can connect with others and feel part of my community. Otherwise I wouldn’t leave the house.

What helps you feel most connected?
Feeling safe, supported and cared for, which is what I feel when I’m here.

Nena, 73, Murrarie

How long have you been coming to Amelia House Social and Community Hub?
2 years. I come to the Hub one day each week and I also get help around the house.

What’s most important to you?
My children and grandchildren and staying as active as I can. I love the outdoors. I was a bushwalking enthusiast but my legs are now bad.

What helps you feel most connected?
Enjoying experiences with my friends from here. We go on outings and bus trips to lovely places like Mount Coot-tha. I do the short walks on flatter ground.
