Loneliness affects all of us from time to time but when those feelings become more frequent or long-lasting, they can quietly take a toll on our health and wellbeing. According to the Queensland Social Survey 2024, 6.5% of all adults in the state report feeling lonely often and another 25.4% feel lonely sometimes.
For many older Queenslanders, changes in health, routine or relationships can lead to fewer social connections and more time spent alone. Research shows that older adults are especially vulnerable to the health impacts of isolation and feelings of loneliness which can include depression, heart disease and cognitive decline.
The theme for Loneliness Awareness Week 2025 (4–10 August) is Moments Matter, which focuses on small, meaningful interactions within our communities as a way of building connection.
Forging a sense of purpose and belonging, at the heart of a community, is a key focus at each of Centacare’s nine social and community hubs.
“The little moments make the biggest difference,” said Centacare Senior Care Partner Linda Abbott. “Whether it’s sharing a freshly cooked meal, having a laugh over morning tea or trying something new together, these are powerful moments of connection, which can help ease loneliness and contribute to overall wellbeing.”
Having worked with Centacare for 27 years, with most of that time at Aspley Social and Community Hub, Linda has first-hand knowledge and insight into what helps people feel connected.
“Everything we do here is centred around our clients and supporting them to age well and enjoy life,” said Linda. “This means they are given choice. They choose the activities that are meaningful for them, the places they want to visit – even the menu they have a say in. They really make this place their own.”
When you walk in the door at the Aspley Social and Community Hub, you immediately feel at home. The kettle’s on, the smell of lunch cooking fills the air, and the sound of laughter and conversation carries from room to room. There’s always something happening from themed days like Pyjama Day to choreographed drumming sessions, art groups and pool competitions. For those who prefer a quieter pace, there are cosy spaces to relax, reflect, or enjoy the gentle activity of feeding the fish by the pond.
“There’s something for everyone,” says Linda. “Clients living with dementia or other challenges are supported gently and respectfully to join in at their own pace.”
With multiple programs running each day and flexible attendance, many clients choose to come more than once a week. “Our clients lead the way,” Linda adds. “We’re not just running activities, we’re building community and connection, together.”
For many, finding a sense of purpose means the world. Whether it’s reconnecting with a lifelong passion or discovering a new skill, having the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities together can be deeply rewarding.
